Manchester United: Ben Jacobs shares Youri Tielemans update

Manchester United’s interest in Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans ‘is growing’, according to CBS Sports Golazo journalist Ben Jacobs.

The Lowdown: United linked with Tielemans

The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old this year, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that the club have been ‘exploring’ a possible deal.

United appear to be closing in on free agent Christian Eriksen after a verbal agreement was reached, while it seems that they haven’t given up on priority target Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, and it looks as if Tielemans could be another midfielder to make the move to Old Trafford.

The Latest: Jacobs provides Tielemans update

Jacobs took to Twitter on Thursday to provide an ‘update’ on Tielemans. He said that United’s ‘interest is growing’, and along with Arsenal, it could provoke a ‘formal offer’ from the Red Devils.

The reporter tweeted: “Youri Tielemans update. Told Tielemans is more likely than Sergej Milinković-Savić for Arsenal. No truth yet in any bid, though. Man United’s interest is growing and could finally provoke formal offers from both clubs. Tielemans wants Arsenal. But as yet nothing tabled to LCFC.”

The Verdict: One to watch?

It could well be an extremely busy few weeks at Old Trafford ahead of Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge, with the United boss thought to be a big fan of Tielemans.

The 25-year-old has been hailed as ‘one of Europe’s top midfielders’ by Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers and can play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder.

The Belgium international has plenty of Premier League experience during his three-year stay at the King Power Stadium, and with Tielemans now into the final 12 months of his contract, a cut-price move could be a possibility for the £49.5m-rated midfielder.

Romano drops significant Saliba update

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that William Saliba is set to stay at Arsenal and be part of the first-team squad next season.

The Lowdown: On the periphery

The Frenchman first arrived in the Premier League when he joined the Gunners from Saint-Etienne in 2019, but is yet to make a senior appearance at the Emirates, having been sent out on loan three times since putting pen to paper in north London.

This has caused plenty of speculation in recent times, linking the 21-year-old with a move away from the capital, but it sounds like Arteta might have other ideas when it comes to planning the next stage of his career.

The Latest: Romano drops Saliba update

Taking to Twitter, Romano confirmed that Arsenal want to retain Saliba and are even keen on offering him fresh terms. He wrote:

“William Saliba situation. Rumours on loan move are wide of mark, Arsenal board and Mikel Arteta both count on Saliba as part of the team for next season.

“Been told situation could only change in case of crazy bid. Arsenal trust him – keen on discussing a new contract.”

The Verdict: Marseille success

Having initially spent £27m on signing Saliba in the first place, it would have been a shame for Arsenal to let him permanently go without giving him a chance to prove himself, so it’s nice to see that Arteta views him as part of his long-term plan.

The defender was a revelation at Marseille last season, averaging an incredible 93.1% pass success rate in Ligue 1, with his performances earning him a call up to Deschamps’ international squad.

With Gabriel and Ben White very much a comfortable pairing at the back, it’ll be interesting to see what the Gunners boss does with Saliba, dubbed ‘fast and powerful’ by Mattéo Guendouzi, but he will now at least have the opportunity to make an impression during pre-season.

Leeds suffer potential Calvin Ramsay blow

Leeds United have been dealt a blow in their quest to Aberdeen youngster Calvin Ramsay, with Liverpool now in advanced talks over a move.

The 18-year-old is considered a hugely exciting young prospect in Scotland, with Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack describing him as an ‘elite’ talent.

Ramsay has been constantly linked with a move away from his current club this summer, with Leeds and Liverpool the two sides seemingly battling to acquire his signature.

The Whites are also thought to be chasing RB Salzburg full-back Rasmus Kristensen, as Jesse Marsch eyes up reinforcements in defence.

The Latest: Reds move ahead

According to Football Insider, Liverpool ‘have been granted permission’ to discuss terms with the player, with the Reds ‘well placed’ to make progress regarding the move.

It means Leeds are now firmly second-favourites to get their man, with the negotiations from Merseyside described as ‘advanced’.

The Verdict: Sign Kristensen instead

Missing out on Ramsay would undoubtedly be a blow for Leeds, given his long-term potential, but the lure of Liverpool could be too great for him to turn down.

Should he move to Anfield, the Whites must snap up Kristensen instead, providing competition for Luke Ayling, who turns 31 this summer.

The Salzburg man could be an excellent signing, having averaged a hugely impressive 4.6 tackles per game in the Champions League this season, as well as 2.3 clearances.

Manchester United: Frenkie de Jong update emerges

Manchester United have reportedly made the ‘strongest bid’ for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Lowdown: Ten Hag to watch Palace match

As we all know, Erik ten Hag will be the man in charge at Old Trafford next season, taking over from Ralf Rangnick. The Dutchman has terminated his Ajax deal six weeks early in order to get going with the Red Devils.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-2/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ten Hag will reportedly be in attendance for the final game of the season away to Crystal Palace this afternoon, and an update has emerged prior to the game on key target De Jong.

The Latest: ‘Strongest bid’ by United

Sport Witness relayed an update from Sport regarding United and De Jong on Friday. They claimed that Ten Hag is pushing the move for De Jong and that the Red Devils have made the ‘strongest bid’ so far.

The report adds that Barcelona would be ‘willing to sell’ the midfielder, who Xavi called a ‘genius’, and won’t go below a fee in the region of €80m (£67.6m).

The Verdict: Get it done

Ten Hag knows just how to get the best out of his fellow countryman following their successful time together at Ajax.

United are also in desperate need of midfield reinforcements with Nemanja Matic set to leave and Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata all out of contract over the coming weeks.

Therefore, it would be ideal if the club could get a deal in place as soon as possible, which will then allow them to explore further additions, including possibly another marquee midfielder to play alongside De Jong.

Pearce: Firmino could play v Aston Villa

Roberto Firmino could feature in Liverpool’s must-win Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Tuesday night, according to journalist James Pearce.

The Lowdown: Another huge game for Liverpool

The Reds played out a dispiriting 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham on Saturday, going top of the table but ultimately seeing their title hopes hampered.

Next up for Jurgen Klopp’s men is a trip to Villa on Tuesday, a game they now simply must win in order to have any realistic chance of securing a 20th league crown.

Firmino has been absent since the middle of April but it seems that he could make a return at Villa Park in midweek.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-31/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Firmino could feature against Villa

That is what Pearce has suggested, as he took to a Q&A for The Athletic to claim that the Brazilian might play a part against Steven Gerrard’s side.

When asked about players who could potentially come into the Liverpool line-up in midweek, the journalist replied:

“I can see Firmino being involved on Tuesday.”

The Verdict: Better option than Jota?

While Firmino may be undercooked in terms of playing time, it could be that Klopp sees him as a better option than Diogo Jota for the clash against Villa.

The Portuguese forward has not offered enough of late, failing to score in his last eight appearances and doing little else of note, whereas the Brazilian is famed for his all-round selflessness and quality.

Changes are needed against Villa in order to retain a freshness ahead of the FA Cup final next Saturday, so giving Firmino the chance to lead the line could make sense, albeit with an element of risk thrown in if he is not fully fit by Tuesday.

Bhuvneshwar and Rayudu in focus ahead of Asia Cup squad selection

With Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni likely to return, the selectors have room to experiment without hurting the team’s chances of victory

Ankur Dhawan31-Aug-2018Like the premiere of an obscure film, highlighted by the ones that are not in attendance rather than the ones who are, the announcement of India’s squad for the Asia Cup might be headlined by those who are rested rather than those who are picked. That isn’t to undermine the importance of the tournament, but simply a corollary of a physically and mentally demanding, two-month tour of England that’s still a Test-and-a-half away from completion. It does, however, present India with one of four opportunities, leading up to the 2019 World Cup, to zero in on a middle-order batsman who can, ideally, also roll his arm over and delve deeper into a seemingly bottomless pace-bowling pool. With bilateral series against West Indies, Australia and New Zealand also coming up, India can afford to get funky with their selections now, without necessarily jeopardising their chances of winning the Asia Cup, especially considering that the experienced Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are likely to return refreshed.Rohit to lead?India’s captain and all-format match-winner Virat Kohli had said that missing his Surrey county stint due to injury was a blessing in disguise, and his scores on the England tour have certainly corroborated that. While runs have flowed from his bat like a river, his team-mates have been largely parched for them, meaning that he has had to shoulder enormous responsibility. The effects of that, or a grueling schedule – it’s irrelevant which one – had begun to show at Lord’s, where Kohli was briefly hampered by a bad back. While his withdrawal might be commercially problematic for the tournament, there is a strong case for him to take a break, leaving his deputy Rohit to lead the team, as in the Nidhas Trophy, which India won.Bhuvneshwar to return? The BCCI had acknowledged the need to manage the workload of their premier fast bowlers after Bhuvneshwar Kumar was ruled out of the Test series in England (the first three Tests at the time).Jasprit Bumrah also had to deal with some injury worries, missing the limited-overs leg of the tour after hurting his thumb while attempting a return catch. He returned with a match-winning five-for at Trent Bridge, which only reinforced his importance in this team. After weeks of intense rehabilitation, Bhuvneshwar, too, returned to action with an impressive performance against South Africa A, picking up 3 for 33 in nine overs and showing no discernible discomfort while bowling or fielding.India could think of roping Bhuvneshwar back in and leaving Bumrah out, as a balancing act.Ambati Rayudu plays one on the leg side•PTI What about Jadhav and Rayudu? With Suresh Raina’s umpteenth foray into the ODI side in England reaping frugal returns, a fit-again Kedar Jadhav should walk back into the squad. He was put out of action by a hamstring injury sustained at the start of the IPL, and though it was not until this past week that he recovered enough to play a competitive match, a batting average that touches 40 and an uncanny bowling action will be hard for India to ignore.Meanwhile, Ambati Rayudu, who came off an IPL high only to suffer the yo-yo low, now looks set to restart his India career. The 32-year-old has officially passed his fitness test and, last Thursday, proved his value with a Man-of-the-Match performance against Australia A. He could be a viable option in the top order should the selectors think of resting KL Rahul.Pant, or Karthik, or both?Dinesh Karthik went to England in the form of his life, but like a broken umbrella during torrential rain, it betrayed him when it mattered most. The ODI decider in Headingley, where he chopped on for 21, was followed by four dismal Test innings, two of which ended in ducks. Rishabh Pant replaced him in Nottingham and has shown flashes of brilliance with the bat already – not least through the audacious six to get off the mark – and safe glovework against the Dukes ball. He could well take over as India’s back-up wicketkeeper in ODIs. That doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for Karthik. With the Asia Cup taking place in conditions where the ball doesn’t seam or swing too much, he could yet add value as a lower-order hitter. Can Kaul keep his place?A death-overs specialist for Surisers Hyderabad, Siddarth Kaul wasn’t nearly as penetrative or economical for India in the England ODIs and, given the surge in the country’s fast bowling stocks, he could find it difficult to keep his place. Mohammed Siraj, with 29 wickets in his last four first-class matches and a four-wicket burst against Australia A in one-day cricket, could get a look-in at Kaul’s expense.

Ashwin to 200: five Tests quicker than Muralitharan

R Ashwin has taken fewer deliveries than any other spinner to take 200 Test wickets. That and more numbers on his landmark

Ashwin’s strike rate while taking 62 wickets in Tests in 2015 was a staggering 36.4: there are only three other instances – all by fast bowlers – when a bowler has taken at least 50 Test wickets in a calendar year at a better strike rate. 51.40 Ashwin’s strike rate – the best among 32 spinners to take 150 or more wickets in Tests. Among those with at least 100 wickets, only Johnny Briggs and Colin Blythe – who bowled on unprepared pitches around the turn of the 20th century – have struck more frequently.

Hit by suspensions, US players given ICC hope

The brunt of USACA’s maladministration has often been borne by the players, especially after previous suspensions. It is far better for them to have the ICC’s active assistance than the passive disinterest they have been used to from USACA

Peter Della Penna28-Jun-20156:17

Chance to take US cricket in new direction – Nadkarni

After the ICC’s announcement that USACA had been suspended for a third time since 2005, there was a groundswell of joy on social media through the US cricket community. Administration across the country is hampered by disparate factions from clubs and leagues all the way up to national level. The one thing that unites the majority of stakeholders though is their mutual distaste for USACA, spoken as if it were a dirty four-letter word instead of a five-letter acronym. The knee-jerk reaction from many around the USA is to shout loudly for the rival American Cricket Federation to take control, if only because it isn’t named USACA. In a wider context, not much is known about the ACF, making its bid to take charge of cricket in the USA in USACA’s stead a long and difficult challenge. In announcing USACA’s suspension, the ICC made it clear it still considers USACA its member and will do what it can to resolve its governance and administrative issues. The approach seems to be that the ICC would rather deal with the devil it knows than the one it does not.No matter how appealing ACF may be compared to USACA, ACF still does not meet much of the criteria laid out by the ICC be welcomed into the Associate fold, regardless of whether USACA’s suspension is lifted or they are expelled in 2016.Though the standard of play has been up and down due to funding issues and varying levels of player commitment, the ACF’s national interleague competition meets the ICC Associate application standard of organizing a men’s competition with at least 16 teams. Other than that, they are deficient in several areas. The ACF currently has no full-time paid chief executive or other full-time administrators, no junior development program, no women’s program. It is also unclear whether they meet the threshold of raising their own funds exceeding 10% of the ICC’s annual disbursement to an Associate, currently in the neighborhood of $400,000. According to sources, ACF had revenue of $32,000 last year, $8,000 short of the requirement.USACA may also fall short of several of these criteria, particularly since they have not had a full-time chief executive since Darren Beazley’s resignation last year, but it is far harder to be kicked out of the fold when you’ve had 50 years of Associate membership than to gain it from scratch. While the politicians draw most of the ire for their poor decision-making, the brunt of the maladministration has often been borne by USA’s players. This was especially true in 2005 and 2007, when the USA men’s teams felt the brunt of the ICC punishment. The current edition of the Intercontinental Cup has been spruced up with the promise of a pathway to playing Test matches for elite Associates. When the competition first started in 2004, USA was in the mix as one of the original participants. But a month before the 2005 competition began, USACA was in a heated squabble with the rival group known as the Council of League Presidents. After USA finished 11th out of 12 teams in the ICC Trophy held in Ireland that June and July, the two warring factions submitted separate teams to the ICC for the start of the Intercontinental Cup in August. Despite pleas from then ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed to come to a joint resolution, neither group budged. USA was kicked out of the competition, replaced by Cayman Islands, and has never rejoined. In the process, their players have lost out on countless opportunities to develop their overall skills by honing them through the rigors of multi-day cricket.Just as debilitating for the players was the 2007 suspension. On the eve of the inaugural World Cricket League Division Three, USACA had stalled attempts to ratify a new constitution and a second suspension was handed down. Once again, the men’s team was yanked out of the competition by the ICC and replaced by another member of the Americas region, this time Argentina. Traditionally the doormat of Americas regional tournaments, Argentina finished second and gained promotion to Division Two, a painful reminder of the consequences of that particular suspension for USACA.When USA’s suspension was finally lifted in 2008, they had been dropped all the way down to Division Five. On talent alone, they have always been good enough to be in Division One or Two. But their preparation is habitually poor, leaving them vulnerable to upsets. The fact that USA currently sit in Division Four, and have never been able to get past Division Three in three attempts, underscores how costly the ICC’s penalty was on the players. The ICC has, however, decided to take mercy on USA’s players this time. USA’s on-field struggles since the ICC dumped USA into Division Five in 2008 and told them to work their way up from scratch have been difficult to overcome. It must have been a factor in allowing USA to still compete at the World T20 Qualifier in Ireland, as well as the U-19 team’s participation at the Americas Qualifier in Bermuda.Logistically, things won’t be too much different for the players. Though USACA had routinely lacked funds to make preparation camps possible, the ICC pays for plane tickets and hotel accommodation for every team at its tournaments. With or without suspension, the ICC would have footed the bill for USA in Ireland. The ICC has also said it plans on offering caretaker support in place of USACA by announcing a regional selection trial in Indianapolis this September as part of an ICC Americas team scheduled to take part in the WICB domestic 50-over tournament. The news received an overwhelming response as players had spirits lifted over the prospect of an open selection process they expect to be fair, neutral, with professional talent evaluators unencumbered by dirty politics and favoritism that players have consistently accused USACA administration of engaging in.Beyond the current World T20 qualification cycle, it is unknown how long the ICC will continue to devote resources as a benevolent foster parent to US players. However, players will take whatever the ICC is willing to offer them so long as they are still given opportunities to compete. It is far better to have the ICC’s active assistance than the passive disinterest they have become accustomed to with USACA.

Sharjah of the '90s

The heat, the frenzy, and the broken chairs – all made you feel like you had gone back in time

Nandakumar Ganesh28-Apr-2014Choice of game
The temperature was rising towards 40 degrees, the humidity was 78%, and the traffic was literally stop-and-go. The parking area was strewn with dirt and throngs of people were huddled outside the rusty iron gate. But when I entered the ground, a whiff of nostalgia hit me as I remembered some of the greatest matches played here in this veteran host of ODIs. Welcome to the Sharjah Cricket Stadium for the battle between the Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.Team supported
Chennai have hit a purple patch and there is no stopping them. The opening stand between Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith had already devastated three very renowned bowling attacks of Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals, so Chennai entered the game as clear favourites.Key performer
A much-improved cricketer now, Smith played with gusto and common sense, giving the utmost respect to Dale Steyn’s bullets and whacking Amit Mishra’s over-pitched deliveries. He made never looked troubled for runs. The ferocity with which he hit the straight fours showed how he had picked up some of McCullum’s batting traits.Shots of the day
Hyderabad’s run-scoring was flagging after Aaron Finch was dismissed. Karn Sharma, an underrated batsman, rose to the occasion and dispatched a Ben Hilfenhaus short ball into orbit. The ball disappeared behind the canopy-shaped tents of the west stand, possibly landing in the traffic outside. The next delivery was pitched on outside off: Sharma used a high back-lift and shaped a wonderful six over deep extra cover. In Chennai’s innings, Smith straight-batted a six over Ishant Sharma’s head and followed through the picturesque shot with a stylish pose, something for the photographers.Crowd meter
Despite Sunday being a working day here in the UAE, spectators flocked in thousands; some even grouping up outside the stadium to watch from the big screens. In contrast to the one-odd Australian, South African or a West Indian in the Dubai Cricket Stadium, Sharjah was inundated with Indians. The seating also had ’90s feel to it – some of the chairs coming off their hinges, the north stand seats sporting no backrests, and the stairs being used as seats in some areas. But the fans were undeterred by all these inconveniences. They had come to get their fill of high-octane T20 action. And they did.Entertainment
The localisation of sound was not all that impressive in Sharjah, as it was in Dubai. The light show made up for this deficit though. Lasers from the east stand reached every nook and corner of the stadium and spot-lit the cheerleaders sporadically, when the chance came.Darren Sammy provided comic relief when he copied a couple of jigs from the cheerleaders while manning the boundary, sending the nearby spectators roaring with laughter.Marks out of ten

India fail to adapt

Three Indian specialist spinners taking a combined 0 for 66 in 6.5 overs in Colombo? How did that happen?

Abhishek Purohit in Colombo29-Sep-2012Take a glance at the scorecard, without looking at the venue, for the Super Eights game between India and Australia and you might say it was played anywhere but on the subcontinent.India’s batsmen struggling against pace and bounce, losing all their wickets to Australia’s quicks. India’s three specialist spinners being thrashed by the power duo of Shane Watson and David Warner. Then you notice the venue, the Premadasa Stadium. Three specialist spinners taking a combined 0 for 66 in 6.5 overs in Colombo? How did that happen?Through a mix of Watson and Warner being Watson and Warner, poor Indian bowling made atrocious by rain, and some questionable decisions from MS Dhoni – leaving out Virender Sehwag not being one of them.Given the way Watson and Warner batted, it might not have made much difference had India bowled better or had Dhoni taken better calls. But they would have given themselves a chance, and if it hadn’t worked, there would have been no shame in losing to probably the most destructive pairing currently in limited-overs cricket.Dhoni had watched Pakistan’s and South Africa’s spinners take turns in choking each other’s batsmen on the same pitch earlier during the evening. Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla and Irfan Pathan had dismissed England for 80 on the same ground on Sunday. Dhoni had no choice but to keep Sehwag out. The logic going into the game was overwhelmingly in favour of playing the extra spinner. But Dhoni erred by giving Ashwin as many as three successive overs at the start and holding back Irfan till the 10th over. Before England began to capitulate to spin, it was Irfan who had struck in consecutive overs at the start. If Irfan is in the side, he has to get the new ball, unless someone else who opens the bowling strikes immediately. Irfan becomes easier to hit as the innings progresses, and by the time he came on, Australia had charged to 81 in nine overs. He didn’t help by bowling short of good length at his gentle pace, and was taken for 19 in six balls. That was to be the only over he would get.Dhoni said he wanted early wickets, so had opened with Ashwin and Zaheer Khan. “If you see Zak has been bowling well for us and his record against both the openers has been really good,” Dhoni said. “So we thought of bowling Ashwin from one end and Zaheer from the other end. The Australian openers are the ones who have been scoring most of the runs for them so it was important that we get an early breakthrough. There were close calls but it didn’t go our way but that was one of the main reasons why we decided Zaheer should open from one end and Ashwin from the other.”Ashwin’s opening over, interrupted by the short rain break, included consecutive fours by Warner. It had already been drizzling for some overs towards the end of Australia’s innings. Dhoni spoke later of how the wet ball had rendered his spinners ineffective. Given the evidence of Ashwin’s opening over, Dhoni could have gone for Irfan, but he gave Ashwin a third over, which went for 16 after Watson pulled a couple of long hops for sixes. That India had an issue with the ball was clear when Ashwin was seen wiping it with a towel.Still, Dhoni bowled Harbhajan and Piyush Chawla before Irfan. Chawla started with a long hop and a half-volley and was carted for 14 in his opening over. Harbhajan tried flighting the ball in his second over. By then, Australia were on top. Warner slog-swept Harbhajan for consecutive sixes. And India’s spinners just fell apart. It does not help that, for a legspinner, Chawla has little heart. It did not help that Ashwin’s reaction to being hit was to bowl an overdose of carom balls. Harbhajan is making a comeback after a year outside the side. It seems he is making an extra effort to flight the ball, something the man who replaced him, Ashwin, usually does, and something he has been accused of not doing much. The result was that in a game in which he said he made one of his toughest calls to be able to play five bowlers, Dhoni ended up having his part-timers bowl four overs by the time Australia reached the target in the 15th.
