Mitchell plotting Newcastle coup by signing "dominant" gem over Real Madrid

Having struggled to get his targets over the line in his first summer at the helm, Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell is reportedly looking to land his first major coup by beating Real Madrid to an exciting young target.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies spent their summer chasing the signature of Marc Guehi, only to see their pursuit end in failure. Transfixed on the Crystal Palace captain, the club failed to consider alternatives and as such have been left short within Eddie Howe’s backline.

England defender Marc Guehi

Sporting director Mitchell has since spoken about the club’s disastrous summer, telling The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards: “Eddie was very clear and it’s not up to me after seven weeks to say, ‘We’ll do this and that’, because I’m in a supporting role. Were there options? Of course there were, as that’s the responsibility of the department and Newcastle.

“That’s why we ended up where we did. It was that player or he felt he was comfortable with the quality we have. You can be on multiple deals at any one time, the focus doesn’t have to be that narrow.

“We probably were too narrow but, coming in mid-July, it’s not my strategy to control, it’s my strategy to support. But there was no player that he (Howe) wasn’t part of deciding and saying, ‘That’s the guy I want’.”

Clearly in need of a rethink when it comes to strategy, the sporting director could now make one move in search of doing exactly that. According to iNews, Mitchell is plotting his first proper Newcastle coup by signing Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong from Chelsea ahead of European giants Real Madrid.

Getting one over on such a club in the transfer market is quite the rarity, representing just how key an achievement it would be for Mitchell and Newcastle.

"Dominant" Acheampong is one for the future

Just 18 years old, Acheampong is one of many young players waiting to break through at Chelsea, but as that long list of names grows every summer, he may be better off turning towards Newcastle and a backline in desperate need of reinforcements. Whilst his best form will come in years to come, the Chelsea academy graduate may well be best-placed to take advantage of the Magpies’ defensive crisis after their summer failure.

The youngster is certainly rated highly too, with analyst Ben Mattinson describing him as a “dominant wide-channel” defender alongside fellow Chelsea gem Ishe Samuels-Smith.

As Mitchell looks to restore some credit with those at St James’ Park, beating Real Madrid to a player who seems destined for great things would be the perfect place to start in 2025. Acheampong would be his first real coup as Newcastle sporting director and perhaps the start of many.

Rangers blundered by releasing SPFL star who’s now worth more than Yilmaz

Glasgow Rangers placed a clear emphasis on recruiting young and exciting players who have room to develop and grow over the years to come.

To create space for new players to come in, the likes of Connor Goldson, Scott Wright, Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, and John Lundstram, among others, were allowed to move on.

This allowed head of recruitment Nils Koppen to swoop to sign Hamza Igamane, Clinton Nsiala, Vaclav Cerny, Mohammed Diomande, Oscar Cortes, Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Nedim Bajrami, Jefte, Liam Kelly, Robin Propper, and Connor Barron for Philippe Clement.

Vaclav Cerny

Eight of those players are aged 25 or younger and five of them are aged 21 or younger, which speaks to the style of recruitment the club have gone for.

Having a steady stream of impressive academy talents would be helpful for a model that is based around developing and selling talent, but that is something Rangers have struggled with.

Ross McCausland emerged in the first-team last season but has yet to nail down a regular starting spot and there are only two active former Rangers academy players – Nathan Patterson and Billy Gilmour – who are valued at more than £10m by Transfermarkt.

One of the most valuable players to have played in the Gers youth set-up, though, is a star they fumbled by allowing him to leave for nothing – Greg Taylor.

Rangers fumbled Greg Taylor

The now-Scotland international began his career with St Andrews, playing there for 18 months, before moving to join Rangers at the age of nine in 2006.

He then spent the next six years playing in the academy for the Light Blues, developing and honing his skills, before being told that he was no longer wanted in the summer of 2014.

Taylor later explained that the Scottish giants allowed him to move on for nothing because he was deemed to be "too small and too slight" to make it at first-team level.

Celtic defender Greg Taylor

The talented left-back admitted that the rejection by Rangers provided him with the motivation he needed to kick on and make sure that he proved those coaches wrong, which is exactly what the Scottish star has gone on to do.

Kilmarnock took advantage of his release from Ibrox and snapped him up for their youth team, before Taylor went on to emerge as a first-team option for them.

The left-footed ace racked up 131 appearances in all competitions for Kilmarnock, in which time he scored one goal and provided ten assists, before being sold to Celtic in the summer of 2019.

Greg Taylor's current market value

At the time of writing (08/09/2024), Transfermarkt currently values Taylor at a price of €7.5m (£6.3m) and that makes him the third-most expensive former Rangers academy player currently playing.

Yet, despite all of his success since being in the youth set-up at Ibrox, the Light Blues did not get a single penny for him as they allowed him to walk away for nothing to join Kilmarnock back in 2014, just over a decade ago.

Since his move to Parkhead in 2019, Taylor has amassed 178 appearances in all competitions for the Hoops and contributed with eight goals and 27 assists.

Celtic defender Greg Taylor.

The Scotland international has won the Scottish Premiership title four times, the SFA Cup three times, and the League Cup twice during his spell in Glasgow to date.

However, he did not manage at least 30 league appearances in a single season until the 2022/23 campaign, with his best form in a Celtic shirt coming in the last two seasons.

As you can see in the table above, Taylor has chipped in with six goals and 13 'big chances' created in the last Premiership seasons under Brendan Rodgers and Ange Postecoglou.

The Scottish dynamo, who claimed in 2022 that he had improved "insane amounts" at Celtic, has proven himself to be an attack-minded left-back who can push forward to provide quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

His fantastic form in the Premiership for the Hoops is why his market value is so high, and why it is currently higher than Clement's current first-choice left-back – when fit – Ridvan Yilmaz.

How much Ridvan Yilmaz is worth

At the time of writing (08/09/2024), Transfermarkt places the Turkey international's current market value at €5m (£4.2m), which is less than Taylor's €7.5m.

Rangers paid an initial fee of £3.4m, in a deal that could rise to £5m, to sign the talented full-back from Besiktas in the summer of 2022 in an attempt to replace Calvin Bassey, who had been sold to Ajax.

This shows that he is worth less than Taylor, who Rangers once allowed to walk out of the door for nothing, but is that reflected in their performances on the pitch?

As you can see in the table above, the Scottish star outperformed Yilmaz as an attacking threat for his side, with more goals, assists, and 'big chances' created.

He was also part of a defence that kept more clean sheets, which speaks to his defensive ability, and this suggests that their respective valuations are fair, in the sense that the Celtic ace is more valuable.

Yilmaz, at the age of 23, does have more time to develop and improve over the years to come, but Taylor is the better player at Premiership level in the here and now.

It is now down to the Turkey international, who has missed the last four matches with a hamstring injury, to hit his stride in a Gers shirt and overtake the Hoops man.

If he can do that, whilst increasing his value by putting in fantastic displays on the pitch, then Rangers can forget about their blunder with the Scotland international.

Development: Liverpool chiefs now told Slot’s top target can move for £59m

Whilst it has all felt rather quiet at Anfield in recent weeks, it appears that Liverpool have been handed an unexpected boost in their pursuit of Arne Slot's top target.

Liverpool taking a patient approach to transfers

While few expected Slot to dive head first into his maiden transfer window in charge of Liverpool, the lack of action on the transfer front may be of concern to some of the Anfield faithful. Despite there being no incomings at the club as of right now, there have been no shortage of rumours surrounding stars who could be making the move to Merseyside this summer.

ByAngus Sinclair Jul 30, 2024

The name that has dominated the majority of the headlines around Liverpool has been that of Anthony Gordon. First offered to the Reds in order to ease Newcastle United's financial worries, the club have remained intent on bringing the player to Anfield this summer.

Anthony Gordon.

A recent report has also linked Liverpool with a move for Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup. It is claimed that the Serie A side would entertain offers of around £21million for the Denmark under 21 international this summer. Joining Frendrup on Liverpool's list of potential targets is Wolves winger Pedro Neto, who also has interest from across the Premier League's top six.

With Liverpool's summer business bound to kick into gear anytime soon, there has been a development in the pursuit of Slot's top target this summer.

Gleison Bremer transfer update

As reported by Sport Witness, the Italian press have named the price it will require for Juventus to part ways with Gleison Bremer this summer. It was previously thought that the Serie A giants were reluctant to sell the defender for any fee, however the report states that an offer of €70million (£59million) would satisfy the Turin outfit.

The higher ups at Anfield are said to have asked for information on Bremer's situation at Juventus, meaning that they are likely already aware of this figure. This development follows news from last week that Slot had identified the Brazilian defender as his top target this summer with the Reds' new boss clearly eager to bolster his side's backline.

Juventus defender Bremer.

Whilst it is not yet known as to whether Liverpool would be willing to meet Juventus' valuation of the player, it does give the Anfield faithful hope that the deal can actually be done during the summer transfer window, If Liverpool are to get a deal for Bremer over the line they would be getting their hands on a highly rated defender who would no doubt be an instant improvement to the Reds' defence.

The 27-year-old featured 36 times for Juventus in the Serie A last season as the Old Lady finished third in the division. The Brazilian defender also managed to bag himself three goals over the course of the campaign, showing another dimension he could add to Slot's side.

Whilst there plenty of work still to do to get the deal over the line, this development is a step in the right direction as far as Liverpool are concerned. With the number that Juventus would consider letting Bremer leave for now known, this deal could be one that develops quickly throughout the final weeks of the window.

Newcastle could now make £10m+ move for winger who plays like Eden Hazard

Newcastle United could be gifted the chance to sign a £10 million-plus winger who plays in a similar style to former Chelsea winger Eden Hazard.

The Magpies have probably been quieter than their fans expected when it came to this summer’s transfer window. Since the club’s takeover, Newcastle have been making big moves in the transfer market, and while they have made some fresh additions this time around, it could be argued they haven’t been at the level expected.

Despite the Premier League season getting underway in a few days, Eddie Howe and co. still have plenty of time to get some new signings into the club. It appears at this stage that the club’s priority remains getting a deal done for defender Marc Guehi, with talks still ongoing over an agreement. But given a recent development concerning Miguel Almiron, Newcastle could have to enter the market for a new winger.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 26, 2024 Miguel Almiron could leave Newcastle United

Almiron joined the Magpies in January 2019 from MLS side Atlanta, and he was relatively unknown at the time, but has since grown into a very important player for the club. However, his time at St. James’ Park could be about to come to an end, as he’s emerged on the radar of an MLS team.

dan-burn-miguel-almiron-newcastle-opinion

It was reported by Fabrizio Romano that executives of Charlotte FC are in London to start talks over an ambitious move to sign Almiron in this transfer window. It is described as not being an easy deal to do, but an approach has been made to Newcastle. Time is not on Charlotte FC’s side, as the MLS window shuts on Wednesday.

This development regarding Almiron could force Newcastle into the market for a replacement, and if that is the case, a name has emerged as a potential option.

Newcastle offered the chance to sign Rayan Cherki

Newcastle have been on the lookout for a new right-sided forward for most of this summer, even before Almiron started to be linked with a move away from the club. But financial restrictions have meant the Magpies’ business has been limited, and they could be about to be offered a bargain deal.

Lyon's Rayan Cherki

According to Chronicle Live, one player who could come onto the radar of Newcastle in what remains of this transfer window is Lyon winger Rayan Cherki. Cherki was close to a move to Borussia Dortmund, but talks stalled over a €15 million transfer (£12m), and now, according to The Athletic, the French side are actively looking for new suitors to take up that deal.

The Chronicle's report claims Newcastle is a possible landing spot, with the Magpies' scouting team sure to be doing their due diligence at the very least.

Cherki has gained a reputation for being a mercurial talent on the ball over his first few years in the senior game. Speaking to TNT Sports, Martin Mosnier compared the 20 year-old to Hatem Ben Arfa and Eden Hazard.

The pundit said, via the Liverpool Echo: “Cherki is an exceptional dribbler. One of the first things one notices when watching him is that he appears to be ambipedal, as he can seemingly utilise both feet equally well.

"His strengths are as follows: key passes, dribbling and his ability to create something out of nothing. He could very well become a Premier League star like Eden Hazard, but I think it's still too early for him to leave."

Romano: Aston Villa submit "formal bid" to sign new attacking gem for Emery

Still not concluded with their summer business, Aston Villa have reportedly sent a "formal bid" to sign a future star for Unai Emery in an attempt to beat Premier League rivals to his signature.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have been the busiest side in the Premier League on the incoming front, signing as many as eight fresh faces, with Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen the standouts among the arrivals. With the new campaign set to get underway in just a couple of weeks, which will see Villa square off against West Ham United, Emery's side will be prepared to go in pursuit of Champions League football for a second season running.

Even with the opening day approaching, Villa could yet welcome further reinforcements late on in the transfer window, having recently been linked to the likes of Joe Gomez. The versatile Liverpool defender would cap off an excellent summer window and hand those in the Midlands a player who has won everything that there is to win in English football.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Whilst the England international may steal the headlines, however, Emery could first welcome a possible star in the making. According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa have sent a "formal bid" to sign Mason Cotcher this summer. The 17-year-old striker is already training with Villa's youth team and impressing, as they look to beat other Premier League clubs to his signature.

The forward has been a free agent since leaving Sunderland last summer, but now looks set to get his next move and a big one at that in the form of Aston Villa.

Cotcher needs Aston Villa move

It's been a strange period for Cotcher since leaving Sunderland, having surprisingly remained without a club last season. Now, however, he must ensure that he takes hold of his Villa opportunity with both hands. At 17 years old, the forward has the chance to eventually feature alongside the likes of Ollie Watkins and with Jhon Duran's future still in doubt, there could yet be an opening within Emery's attacking options. Cotcher is certainly catching the eye on trial too.

The teenager could be picking the perfect time to earn such a move. Villa's stock has rarely been higher in the Premier League era following their Champions League qualification and the flurry of fresh faces that have come through the door this summer.

Perhaps finally finding his next club, Cotcher must shake off any rust and hit the ground running in Villa's academy set up in pursuit of an eventual opportunity in and around Emery's side. The pathway is certainly there to take advantage of at Villa Park, as proved by the likes of Jacob Ramsey.

Ashworth and Man Utd now table offer for 16 y/o winger prodigy

Manchester United have made an offer for a hugely talented young player with a superb international youth record, according to a fresh transfer update.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils are targeting new signings all over the pitch in the current transfer window, but centre-back appears to be a primary position of focus. Barcelona ace Ronald Araujo has emerged as a strong contender to come in for Erik ten Hag, with the Uruguayan considered an alternative to Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt, who has been backed to come in of late.

Another Bundesliga signing has also been mooted in Borussia Monchengladbach teenager Winsley Boteli, although the 17-year-old likely wouldn't be considered an immediate key man, instead arriving as a hopeful future star at Old Trafford.

Manchester United transfer target Ronald Araujo in action for Barcelona.

Meanwhile, a surprise rumour claims that Romelu Lukaku could potentially seal a return to United ahead of next season, being seen as an option alongside fellow target Joshua Zirkzee. It would be a huge shock if the Belgian came back to Old Trafford, however, especially as he is now in his 30s.

When it comes to possible outgoings in the approaching months, Harry Maguire is one player who could move on, and the Red Devils are reportedly willing to cash in on the 31-year-old, who has never managed to fully convince the masses since joining back in 2019.

Man Utd make offer for teenage star

According to a new report from Football Insider, Manchester United have made an offer for Tottenham teenager Mikey Moore, looking to snap up the young winger this summer.

The same applies to rivals Manchester City, however, with the 16-year-old receiving a number of offers ahead of his 17th birthday next month. Borussia Dortmund are also mentioned in the update, which also states that Spurs are "pulling out all the stops to prevent Moore from switching clubs", as FA regulations stop him signing a professional deal until he turns 17.

Mikey Moore makes his Tottenham debut

Much like the aforementioned Boteli, Moore wouldn't be seen as someone who can come in and make a big difference in United's first team from the off, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be an extremely eye-catching signing.

At just 16, the Englishman has already made two appearances for Spurs, showing that Ange Postecoglou trusts him, and his manager spoke glowingly about him after handing him his debut earlier this year.

"We’ve had him training with us for a while, I’ve been trying to see if we can get him some game time, because we’ve kept him out of the 21s as well, it’s a bit of a reward for him for working hard in the last two, three weeks as part of the first team squad, to give him that experience. He still has a long way to go, he’s only 16, but he’s a good kid and hopefully that encourages him."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal have already seen north London rivals Tottenham surpass them as the team with the biggest stadium in the English capital, while West Ham now have a greater capacity, too, after moving into the London Stadium and they have plans to increase that number to 68,000. Manchester United are aiming to build a stadium that could hold 100,000, while Manchester City will bring their limit closer to 60,000 by the end of 2026.

While the Arsenal board consider their options to expand their stadium, Mikel Arteta's team will continue their challenge for the Premier League title. They are next in action on Sunday when they face Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.

Pochettino rates him: Ipswich keen on signing Joe Rodon alternative

Ipswich Town won't want to completely lose their identity heading up to the Premier League, with the Tractor Boys an absolute joy to watch last season in full flow.

The likes of Leif Davis were unstoppable at points for Kieran McKenna's men marauding forward, helping himself to a staggering assist haul of 21 in total, but the Suffolk outfit will know that the step-up in quality means they'll have to be tougher at the back.

Ipswich were a leaky side last campaign despite their promotion heroics, conceding 16 more goals than Championship title-winners Leicester across the 46-game season, and that could be why they're being linked with a number of new defensive recruits.

Ipswich looking at 6 foot 1 rock

According to football journalist Graeme Bailey, Ipswich Town are considering signing former loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers this summer but will face stern competition to land his services.

The 6 foot 1 centre-back, who is currently on the books at Celtic as a key cog under Brendan Rodgers, is also being eyed up by London-based duo West Ham United and Fulham this transfer window, as per Bailey, with the Scottish side adamant that they will aim to keep hold of their star 26-year-old despite all this interest heating up.

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

This could mean Ipswich are now hunting the signature of Carter-Vickers down over exploring a deal for Joe Rodon, who they have also been heavily linked with this transfer window, as McKenna tries to strengthen his side's porous defence ahead of their voyage up to the Premier League.

Opening the season now facing off against Liverpool and Manchester City will no doubt leave those at Portman Road anxious about how many goals they could potentially ship, with Carter-Vickers' signature likely to shore up the Tractor Boys at the back, to try and keep their heads above water in the top-flight.

Whilst Rodon is a hot property at the moment, and rightly so after an electric season on loan in the Championship with Leeds, Carter-Vickers would also arrive in Suffolk with plenty of hype attached to his name.

Winning seven trophies in total now for the Bhoys since joining at the start of the 2021/22 season, with two inclusions in the Scottish Premiership Team of the Season along the way, the towering defender could now see this as the perfect opportunity to move on and to prove himself in the top English division.

Head-to-head with Rodon across the last season, Carter-Vickers goes up against the current Tottenham Hotspur man valiantly, bettering him in certain areas, even in spite of having an injury-heavy last season for his Glasgow-based employers.

The USA international will also feel there's unfinished business for him in the Premier League, having never made appearance in the top division for Spurs, when he was still on the roster of the North London club as a promising gem for the future.

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Once tipped for great things at Spurs though, with ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino even declaring that a younger Carter-Vickers had the potential to be "one of the best centre-backs in England in the future", Carter-Vickers will sense that this is finally his moment to shine in England, after being offloaded to Celtic for around the £6m mark in 2022.

Coming into the side potentially to add numbers, battling it out with the likes of Luke Woolfenden and Cameron Burgess in the heart of defence, McKenna would be over the moon if this move got over the line.

Newcastle make first move for "brilliant" £45,000-p/w Almiron upgrade

As Eddie Howe and Newcastle United look to strengthen their squad depth this summer, they've been linked with a fresh face to hand their side an exciting attacking boost in the transfer window.

Newcastle transfer news

Newcastle aren't wasting any time this summer. Already, it looks as though Lloyd Kelly is on his way upon the expiry of his current Bournemouth contract, whilst Tosin Adarabioyo could also complete a similar move at the end of his Fulham deal. The two defenders could be just the start of a busy summer for the Magpies, who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing season.

It's not just their backline that those at St James' Park need to upgrade though, especially if Miguel Almiron does leave in the coming months. The winger hit new heights in the 2022/23 season, but failed to return to such form this season to hand Newcastle a fresh problem going forward.

Now, in search of rediscovering that quality, the Magpies have reportedly turned to a fellow Premier League side and a winger who earns a reported £45k-a-week at his current club.

Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron.

According to L'Equipe, Newcastle have expressed their interest in Bryan Mbeumo ahead of a potential move to sign the Brentford winger this summer. Mbuemo was a standout in the absence of Ivan Toney for the majority of the campaign until he suffered an untimely injury blow. Nonetheless, it seems as though that form was enough to attract Newcastle, who are also reportedly joined by Liverpool in their interest.

With doubts over the future of Almiron and the winger struggling to replicate the form of last season, Mbeumo could step in to offer Newcastle the ultimate upgrade in the summer transfer window.

"Brilliant" Mbeumo can replace Almiron

Still just 24 years old, Mbeumo is entering his prime, which makes now the perfect time to leave Brentford and complete a big move elsewhere. Whilst the attention has been on Toney's future, it is the Cameroon international who could steal the headlines in deserving fashion this summer to become Newcastle's Almiron replacement.

Those at Newcastle will be hoping to see Mbeumo end his current St James' Park record if he does complete a move, however, given that he's never won there with Brentford in a frustrating run for the winger.

That record aside, however, Mbeumo is a player on the up and one who has been recognised by Brentford boss Thomas Frank in the past, who said via FourFourTwo: "It’s brilliant I must say. He’s been brilliant for us this year in the Premier League. He came back from a minor injury, we knew that he wanted to play ready for Tuesday. And three quality finishes, very composed.”
