Sky Sports: Man Utd now plotting move to sign £67m star alongside striker

Manchester United and INEOS are now plotting a move to sign a “versatile” £67 million star alongside a new striker, according to Sky Sports.

Man Utd add new striker to transfer radar

It has become quite clear to Ruben Amorim that signing a new striker during the summer transfer window should be a top priority given the lack of goals in the team throughout this campaign.

Man United have set their sights on signing a new striker this summer and a fresh name is on their radar.

Strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have been tasked with leading the United line this season, but the pair have struggled to make a regular impact in terms of goals on a consistent basis. In fact, Hojlund’s struggles have meant he is now being linked with a move to Napoli.

The Italian side are said to be keen on landing the Denmark international, as Antonio Conte sees him as someone who can compete alongside current striker Romelu Lukaku.

So as Hojlund is linked with a move away from Old Trafford, United have now added Mainz striker Jonathan Burkardt to their transfer wishlist.

Burkardt is the latest striker to be added to their list after impressing club scouts in the 3-4-3 system that the German side like to play, which is identical to how Amorim sets up his United team.

Man Utd plotting move to sign £67m Bundesliga star

While the Red Devils continue their search for a new number nine, according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man United are also weighing up a move to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig alongside a striker.

Plettenberg states that United have now moved away from holding an interest in signing Simons, as they are looking to sign a “versatile” attacking midfielder as well as a new striker. However, he states the issue for the Red Devils could be the cost, as Simons is considered very expensive.

The German side are looking to get around €80 million for the Netherlands international, which is roughly £67 million. Despite the hefty price tag, it is possible that Simons will leave Leipzig in the summer.

Despite Leipzig’s struggles in the Bundesliga and the Champions League, it has been another impressive campaign on a personal level for Simons. The midfielder has netted seven goals in 18 league games, as well as grabbing four assists along the way.

The Dutchman, who has 24 caps to his name, is under contract until June 2027, so Leipzig still have time left to decide on his future, but given the team’s struggles this campaign, Simons may be looking for a new challenge in the summer.

Aston Villa have already sold their own Mateta who’s a "true monster"

For the second time in as many seasons, Aston Villa suffered a heavy defeat away to Crystal Palace. This time, they were defeated 4-1 at the hands of Oliver Glasner’s side, in a very disappointing collapse.

After going into the break 1-0 down via a goal from Ismaila Sarr, Villa equalised fairly quickly after the interval thanks to a lovely goal from Morgan Rogers. However, the Eagles retook the lead just before the hour mark, then added a third and fourth, including another goal from Sarr, to seal a fantastic win for the Eagles.

It was a dismal performance from Unai Emery’s side, who struggled to handle the destructive Jean-Phillipe Mateta.

Aston Villa’s struggles against Mateta

There has not been a striker more in form in the Premier League in 2025 than Mateta. According to TNT Sport, no player in the English top flight has more goals than the Frenchman in this calendar year so far, with eight strikes.

Jean-Philippe Mateta

Unfortunately for the Villans, they were on the receiving end of Mateta’s dominant form on Tuesday night. Despite playing with three centre-backs for the first time this season, the West Midlands club couldn’t handle Mateta.

Indeed, Birmingham Live journalist John Townley gave all three of Villa’s centre-backs, Lamar Bogarde, Axel Disasi and Ezri Konsa, a 4/10 rating at full-time. He explained that the Villans backline ‘was pulled apart’ after the halftime interval, which was certainly true given the four goals they conceded.

If anything, the Palace striker’s goal highlighted the struggles that Villa experienced at the back. Mateta was able to drift into acres of space, getting onto a loose ball and firing a shot home from inside the Villa box, relatively unchallenged.

It was a baptism of fire for Emery’s side, coming up against the Premier League’s most in-form player. Frustratingly, the West Midlands side perhaps sold their own version of the Palace striker.

Aston Villa already sold their own Mateta

Ollie Watkins is a fantastic player and has been crucial for Villa this season. The England international has 13 goals and ten assists in 37 games under Emery this term.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins celebrates scoring their first goal withLeonBailey

However, he can’t do it all alone, and perhaps Villa made the wrong call in selling his understudy in January.

Jhon Duran’s move from Villa Park to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr made the Villans a fortune. He made the move to Cristiano Ronaldo’s side for upwards of £71m in the January transfer window.

However, there is no doubt that his departure has left a bit of a hole in the squad. The Colombian was scintillating for Villa, scoring 20 goals in 78 games.

However, he played just 2272 minutes in that famous Claret and Blue shirt, the equivalent of 25 full 90-minute games. He was deadly in front of goal, a “true monster” according to football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Selling Duran might seem like a strange decision on reflection, given just how good of a goalscorer he is.

However, Jamie Carragher explained in January that he thought Villa should “go against the grain” and sell their striking sensation. Of course, they did just that.

Interestingly, over the last two domestic league seasons, Duran and Mateta are actually quite similar statistically on FBref.

For example, the Frenchman averages 0.39 goal-creating actions per game, compared to 0.4 by Duran, and both average 0.25 goals per shot.

Moving Duran on in the winter transfer window was a bold call from Villa. At the start of February, Emery and co were actually linked with a move for Mateta in the summer, as per journalist Graeme Bailey.

Perhaps they could have saved themselves a fortune by keeping one of the hottest prospects in football instead.

'If you want to be a star, stars step up' – Alexi Lalas praises USMNT's Josh Sargent and Diego Luna for 'wonderful' performances at the club level

The outspoken analyst singled out the Norwich City and the Real Salt Lake stars, hailed them for recent showings

Lalas applauds Sargent's Championship Team of the Season selectionBelieves Luna thrives in the spotlight after standout performancesSuggests that Luna will be in conversation for USMNTGetty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED

USMNT striker Josh Sargent’s remarkable campaign for Norwich City was rewarded this week when he was including on the English Football League Championship Team of the Season. The former Werder Bremen star netted 15 goals for the Canaries. Former USMNT star Alexi Lalas praised Sargent for the honor, calling it "fully deserved."

“He has had a wonderful, a wonderful season," Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. "He has gotten us to talk about him on a consistent basis. Now, obviously it's because we are lacking a number a No. 9 and it hasn't necessarily translated to the national team. But from a pure championship perspective, I think it's a no brainer to have Josh Sargent in that team of the season. And, you know, he should be incredibly proud of the season that he put out. We'll see if that if he's able to parlay that into a potential move to someplace bigger.”

Lalas also praised Diego Luna's emergence as a creative force for both Real Salt Lake and the national team and suggested that the 21-year-old midfielder's fearless mentality makes him ideally suited for the international stage.

“He is in his moment right now," he said of Luna. "And sometimes when everybody starts talking about you, especially if you're a younger, less experienced player, it can be difficult to accept that. And then there's others – and I think that's what Luna is here – that are kind of living up to their reputation and their larger-than-life personality and enjoying it and embracing it. And so that's what's you're seeing. This was a big, big performance… when it comes to Diego Luna, I think we're going to be talking about, especially over the next couple a couple of years relative to the World Cup, how he is kind of burst on the scene.

“And it hasn't felt like a burden to him. As a matter of fact, I think he likes the spotlight. And as we always say, 'If you want to be a star, stars step up.' When everybody is waiting there with their arms full. That's saying, all right, do something – and in this case, he certainly did.”

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The USMNT continues its preparation for the 2026 World Cup with ongoing questions about who will lead the line and provide attacking creativity against elite sides. Sargent's renaissance at Norwich, alongside Luna's meteoric rise for Real Salt Lake, represents the kind of development pathway American soccer has long sought to establish.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Both players will look to solidify their positions within the USMNT setup during the upcoming international fixtures and the Gold Cup this summer. For Sargent, the Championship season only has one game left and he then faces a potentially pivotal transfer window where a move to a higher level of competition could further enhance his national team prospects.

Luna, on the other hand, has become a consistent figure for Real Salt Lake and faces Vancouver Whitecaps next on May 3.

"Alarm bells" – Pundit shares Kevin Danso "concern" for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur sealed a loan deal to sign Kevin Danso from RC Lens in a last-gasp January window move, which includes a £21 million obligation to buy, but one pundit has shared a “concern” for Spurs in regard to their new arrival.

Kevin Danso set for Tottenham debut against Liverpool

With both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero ruled out of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Liverpool, and Radu Dragusin out for at least six months after sustaining ACL damage, manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Danso is set to play a role at Anfield tonight.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 6, 2025

You couldn’t ask for a tougher debut than a baptism of fire at Anfield, with Spurs holding on to a precious 1-0 lead from the first leg of their semi-final and Postecoglou desperately looking not to concede easy chances.

“He will play,” said Postecoglou on Danso’s inclusion against Liverpool. “Whether he starts or not we will take a look because we have another game three days later and that has been our existence for quite a while now.

“You are right, Ben (Davies), Archie, Pedro (Porro) has played every minute of football we have had for the last three months, but the boys are handling it okay, and the performances are still stacking up.

“It’s great to get Kevin in. He is ready to play. Whether he starts or he comes on, we will make a decision. It’s really important he is part of it now because losing Radu was a massive blow so having him available is good.”

When asked if Danso was a reactionary signing from Spurs, given just how late it was on in the window, not to mention how they hijacked Wolves’ deal for the Austrian, Postecoglou assured supporters he’s there for the long-term.

“I don’t think we’d be signing 21-year-olds and 19-year-olds reactively,” said Postecoglou in his pre-Liverpool press conference.

“If it was reactive we’d be signing 35-year-olds. So the nature of the players signed shows they’re not just about now, they’re about us continuing to build. I certainly see Toni, Mathys and Kevin very much part of a short, medium and long-term strategy here, for sure. They’re all really good fits for what we’re doing.”

Pundit shares Kevin Danso "concern" for Tottenham

Speaking to Tottenham News, pundit John Wenham shared a “concern” he holds with Danso signing for Tottenham.

“Danso isn’t actually someone that I know too much about,” Wenham said. “However, I do think to myself that he is 26, he’s been playing in the French league for a long time, and none of the other clubs have touched him.

“Some of these scouts have been on extensive missions in France scouting the likes of William Saliba, Wesley Fofana and Leny Yoro. However, nobody has picked up on Danso before. As a result, that is a bit of a concern for me.

“I hope I’m wrong, and he comes in and smashes it. However, that does ring some alarm bells for me.”

While the 26-year-old didn’t quite make it at Southampton, his Ligue 1 form for Lens shows exactly why Tottenham brought him to N17.

According to WhoScored, Danso stood out as Lens’ second-best performer before making the switch to Spurs, all while making more clearances and blocks per 90 than any other player in Lens’ squad. The defender also won more aerial duels per 90 than any of his former teammates in that time.

Chelsea considering new left-back for Enzo Maresca

While a lot of the talk has centered around Chelsea’s hunt for a new centre-back in January, leading to their serious interest in re-signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, it is also believed that a new left-back is on the agenda for 2025.

Chelsea have held initial discussions with Palace over a deal for Guehi, according to reliable journalist Simon Phillips, with one report from The Sun even claiming that BlueCo lodged a low-ball bid for the England international which was rejected out of hand.

The latter claim is yet to gain traction, but what appears to be certain is that Guehi is attracting serious interest from Chelsea as Enzo Maresca scours the market for a new central defender.

Injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile have exacerbated their need for another body in that area, but it is now claimed that Chelsea could even bring forward their plans to secure left-back cover.

Chelsea have been monitoring Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez in that regard, with Phillips sharing via his Substack that a new full-back is now possible for this month.

Chelsea add PSG left-back Nuno Mendes to left-back shortlist

The reporter also states that PSG left-back Nuno Mendes has found his way on to their list of targets. The Portugal international, rumoured to command a price tag of around £58 million, is out of contract in 2026 and Luis Enrique’s side may be forced into making a tough decision on his long-term future soon.

Paris St Germain's Achraf Hakimi celebrates scoring their fourth goal withNunoMendesand Marco Asensio

The 22-year-old was forced to spend the majority of last season out with a hamstring injury, and appears to still be fighting to get back to his best. Mendes has been called one of the best left-backs in world football, though, and he’d be quite the signing for Chelsea in place of the exit-bound Ben Chilwell in that position.

Phillips writes that Chelsea have identified Mendes as a potential signing from PSG, and he interestingly employs the exact same representatives as midfield mainstay Caicedo (AS1), who helped to facilitate the Ecuadorian’s marquee move to Stamford Bridge from Brighton.

That being said, a new full-back in January will apparently depend on whether Renato Veiga leaves.

“Chelsea have many names on the left back shortlist, but the latest one we are now hearing about via a top SPTC source, is PSG’s Nuno Mendes,” wrote Phillips.

“The Portuguese international left back will have a year left on his current contract come the summer of 2025. You hear me speak about opportunities all the time, and there might be one here that Chelsea are looking at. But so are many other clubs, he has a lot of interest.

“So, new left backs will depend on the Veiga situation and whether he pushes to go out to play this month or not. Remember, there are a number of Chelsea fringe players who are frustrated with their current game time and could still push to go this month.”

England crumble to 110 for 9 as NZ overcome disappointment of semi-final loss

New Zealand, meanwhile, overcame their disappointment of losing to Australia in the other semi-final just 12 hours earlier to run roughshod over England, who crumbled to 110 for 9 in their 20 overs.Hayley Jensen finished with three wickets while Devine and Fran Jonas took two apiece as New Zealand reversed their hefty defeat to England in their last group-stage game. Devine then struck 51 not out to ease the team to victory with 49 balls to spare.Wheels fall off EnglandNew Zealand made a fine start to the contest when Danni Wyatt was out on the first ball of Jensen’s opening over – the seventh delivery of the match – to a sharp catch by Suzie Bates at cover.Alice Capsey, the youngster who has more than once lifted England after the loss of early wickets this summer, then edged Hannah Rowe behind to Isabella Gaze and England were 10 for 2 in the third over.Nat Sciver restored the powerplay to respectable territory for England, however, cruising to 26 off 15 deliveries to make it 41 for 2 after six overs. But after adding just one more run to her score, Sciver saw her middle and off stumps flattened by a gem from Devine.Bowling to bronzeWhen Jonas, who made her T20I debut earlier in the tournament, had Maia Bouchier out lbw attempting to sweep a fuller ball which struck her back leg, England slumped to 57 for 5 at the halfway point of their innings. Man Utd now plotting move to sign £62m ace scouts just watched shock Bayern

Looking to sharpen their attack in 2025, Manchester United are now reportedly plotting a move to sign an impressive forward who their scouts just watched shock Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils have plenty of work to do when 2025 arrives, as exposed by their recent inconsistency under new manager Ruben Amorim. What certainly hasn’t helped the former Sporting boss, however, is the comments of Marcus Rashford. Attempting to rebuild and finally turn things around at Old Trafford, the last thing that Amorim needed was one of his star players setting his sights on a fresh challenge.

Sending clubs around Europe on red alert, Rashford now seems destined to leave Old Trafford as a case of what might have been given the impact that he made when he first broke through into the Manchester United side. As one star departs, however, another could swiftly arrive.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Manchester United are now plotting a move to sign Benjamin Sesko after sending scouts to watch the RB Leipzig striker score within just two minutes against Bayern Munich, only to eventually find himself on the wrong end of a 5-1 mauling in the Bundesliga.

Aston Villa now eyeing "relentless" £25m ace who's scored 15 goals in 24/25

He’s enjoying an excellent season.

ByTom Cunningham Dec 21, 2024

Reportedly valued at €70-75m (£58-62m), Sesko certainly won’t come cheap but if Manchester United are looking to sharpen what has been a blunt attack at times this season, then splashing out on a striker of his calibre may well be the way forward.

"Weapon" Sesko is ready for big move

Having decided to stay put last summer instead of completing a move to Arsenal, Sesko has since solidified his place as one of the most exciting rising stars in European football. And now, one year on from rejecting the Gunners, he’s more ready than ever to depart Leipzig and complete a move to the biggest stage, which is where Manchester United could come in.

Just 21 years old, Sesko has been the star of the show ever since joining RB Leipzig and that has only remained the case in the current campaign with 11 goals and three assists from 23 games in all competitions. Earning deserved praise as a result, Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig dubbed the Manchester United target “the Slovenian weapon” back in October.

Signing Sesko would certainly be one way to steal the headlines away from Rashford’s potential exit and there’s no doubting the impact that he would also make on the pitch.

Jimmy Peirson's hundred caps Australia A's tour with outstanding run chase

Queensland wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson completed an outstanding match for Australia A with an unbeaten century to lead them home in a big run chase against Sri Lanka A.The victory was made more impressive by the fact Australia A were struggling on 69 for 4 having been left a target 367. Firstly, Peirson added 151 with Henry Hunt who made a fine century of his own and then the match-clinching partnership in an unbroken stand of 150 with allrounder Aaron Hardie.Peirson’s unbeaten 128 followed his undefeated 67 in the first innings which helped keep Australia A in the game after the rest of the batting struggled. It also meant he was not dismissed in his three innings during the two-match series having been subbed into the opening match when Travis Head was called into the ODI squad.Peirson had not been an original member of the Australia A squad but was called up when Peter Handscomb left the tour for family reasons.Earlier, Hunt had made 107 from 212 deliveries after the top order had been removed by Lakshitha Rasanjana and Dilshan Madushanka. A notable element of both centuries was the relative lack of boundaries: Hunt hit just three while Peirson’s 189-ball stay only included four in what became a one-day style chase during the final session. The five-wicket victory completed a successful tour for the Australia A which saw them take the four-day series 2-0 following a share of the two one-day matches. The benefit of the concurrent series to the senior tour was also emphasised by the ability to draft players in amid what has been a lengthy injury list during the T20Is and ODIs while giving others preparation. At various times Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Matt Kuhnemann and Scott Boland have moved between the squads. Kuhnemann made his ODI debut and played four matches in the series while Boland, who is part of the Test squad, claimed seven wickets in this match in his first competitive bowl since the end of the Australian season in late March.Left-arm spinner Jon Holland and offspinner Todd Murphy, along with Kuhnemann, will stay on with the Test squad as part of the preparation for the two-match series in Galle. None of them have yet been officially added to the group, but with doubts continuing over Ashton Agar after his side strain there could yet be an opening.

Dan Friedkin eyeing move for "special" manager who has 6 wins vs Everton

A “special” manager is being eyed to replace Sean Dyche at Everton when Dan Friedkin’s takeover of the Merseyside club is completed, according to reports.

Dyche job in the balance at Everton

Everton are currently having a season to forget. After 12 games, the Toffees are 15th in the Premier League, just two points above the drop zone, having won just two games. Back in September, they were also booted out of the EFL Cup at the hands of the top flight’s bottom club Southampton.

As a result of their poor start, Dyche is now under serious pressure and, according to GiveMeSport, a managerial change under the club’s prospective new ownership is inevitable. Reports elsewhere have claimed that Friedkin wants to move away from Dyche’s current style of football at Everton.

BBC reporter provides update on Sean Dyche sack latest after West Ham draw

The latest update comes after a tough start to the season at Goodison Park.

ByBen Browning Nov 12, 2024

The Friedkin Group reached an agreement to buy a majority stake in Everton back in September. According to TEAMtalk, the deal is expected to be finalised before the end of the year.

Everton and Friedkin eyeing Moyes

According to reliable journalist Alan Nixon, former Everton and West Ham United boss David Moyes will be a target for the Toffees once Dan Friedkin’s takeover is completed.

Nixon claims that the Scotsman is said to be favoured by some members of the Friedkin group because of his prior experience at Goodison Park, as well as his track record of keeping clubs in the Premier League. The 61-year-old, who is currently without a club, is open to returning to Everton, says GMS.

West Ham United manager David Moyes

Moyes spent 11 years at Everton between 2002 and 2013, guiding the club to four top-six finishes. After leaving Merseyside, he had spells at Manchester United, Real Sociedad, and, most recently, West Ham United, where he oversaw the club’s most successful period in Premier League history and won the Europa Conference League in 2023.

Having taken charge of 697 top-flight games, Moyes is the third-most experienced manager in Premier League history, behind only Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. 17 of those 697 games have been against Everton, of which Moyes has won six, drawn one, and lost the other 10.

Described as “special” by Jamie Carragher, Moyes left the Hammers at the end of the 2023 season after four-and-a-half years in charge at London Stadium.

Upon his departure, West Ham’s joint-Chairman David Sullivan said: “David has been responsible for a period of great progress and success in our history, and we are extremely grateful for all of his hard work, commitment and dedication to the role.”

“David has been an absolute professional to work with and he will leave with our greatest respect and good wishes – he deserves to be held in the highest esteem for the service he has given to West Ham United, and we wish him every success in the future.

Speaking shortly after his departure was announced, Moyes revealed that he doesn’t plan on calling it time on his managerial career just yet.

“Do I want to stay in management? ‘Yes’ would be the answer to that.”
