Will Australia's pitches be juicy for the Ashes?

More grass on the surfaces, and changes to the Kookaburra ball, have made Test batting in the country difficult over the past half-decade

Andrew McGlashan14-Nov-20251:45

Will Australian pitches affect England’s Ashes chances?

One of the many areas of interest leading into the Ashes is what type of pitches the series will be played on. Questions abound about whether it’s better to take on England on flatter surfaces or on more lively pitches that may narrow any gap between the two attacks but also make it harder for the Bazball batters to flourish. Steven Smith recently endorsed the latter approach. There is no doubt that batting has become tougher in Australia in recent years. Anyone with a top-order spot is usually happy to mention that, and the numbers back it up. In some cases, especially at the MCG, more grass is being left on the pitches – the 2017-18 Ashes Test, which included Alastair Cook’s double-century, finally persuaded those in charge that change was needed. The tweaks to the Kookaburra ball around 2021 have also had a significant impact. The way England’s ODI top order – consisting of at least four Test players – floundered against the moving ball in New Zealand won’t have gone unnoticed, either.Related

Why Head hopes Ashes pitches continue to help the bowlers

Harry Brook is going to the Ashes with a clear mind, but how will he fare there?

England and Australia Ashes squads compared: who comes out on top?

“England play pretty well on the flatter wickets, the way they play,” Smith said last month. “So, if there’s a bit in it like there has been the last three or four years, with our bowling attack, it certainly makes things a lot more difficult for their batters.”The ten-year trendIn the last five seasons, since 2020-21, when Australia faced India in the Covid summer, the collective Test batting average in the country has been 26.75. Globally for the same period – excluding the handful of Tests staged in the UAE and Ireland – that places Australia seventh between Bangladesh and India.Although conditions had already started to change, in the five summers previous, the average was 34.46, which, for countries that had hosted at least ten Tests, gave Australia the highest collective average. Last summer’s series against India had a collective average of 24.43, which was the lowest for an Australian home season since 1978-79.

Significantly, the altered Kookaburra ball was first used in Tests in Australia during the 2021-22 Ashes. The major changes were a double coating of lacquer, which helps the ball retain its hardness, and a plastic lining under the leather, which means the seam stays more prominent.Smith said during last season’s series against India that he thought batting had got more difficult since the changes to the Kookaburra. “Particularly when at the same time wickets have got greener, so it’s kind of like the perfect storm coming together.””But the ball’s definitely staying harder, so I think the last three years have probably been the hardest that I’ve experienced in my career batting-wise, in terms of the amount of movement that’s being generated.”If you look back five years ago, you’re seeing consistent 400-500s being scored in the first innings. If you put a three in front of it these days, you’re usually in a pretty strong position, so you know you’ve got to think about that as well when you’re thinking about play. Sometimes if you don’t get a hundred, it’s not the end of the world.”The downward trend of batting averages has not only been seen in Australia. Analysis by ESPNcricinfo earlier this year showed how bowlers have dominated since the World Test Championship was introduced, which brought with it the incentive to push for victories. Only four Tests in the last WTC cycle ended in draws – and all of them were affected by rain, preventing 300 overs of play – although the trend in result-oriented Tests pre-dated the WTC.MCG head curator Matt Page has changed Melbourne’s Test pitches•Getty ImagesHow the venues have changedAll of Australia’s major venues that continue to host Test cricket – the WACA staged its last men’s game during the 2017-18 Ashes – except for Perth Stadium, have seen a decline in their batting average over the last five years, with the MCG and SCG showing a significant shift. The MCG, where Scott Boland took 6 for 7 during the 2021-22 Ashes, is widely regarded as the spiciest Test pitch in the country now, although it mellowed somewhat for last season’s visit by India, where the game went deep into day five. That may be the balance that is sought in the future, although the T20I against India late last month did plenty with the new ball. The SCG’s figures changed substantially with last year’s ball-dominated game against India, where, in an attempt to bring some life back to the square, the ground staff veered too far in the other direction. How the pitches in Sydney shape up this season will be worth watching.

Perth Stadium, which missed two seasons due to Covid, is an interesting example as it beds down as a Test venue. Last year both first innings were over within four sessions. The pitch then flattened for a period on days two and three as India made 487 for 6 before unevenness started to come through via large cracks. The year before, against Pakistan, it was a nightmare for batting in the fourth innings thanks to those same cracks.A different day-nighter this seasonAdelaide Oval has been the traditional home of the day-night Test but for this year’s Ashes, the pink-ball game will be staged at the Gabba, which has hosted three previous floodlit Tests, including Australia’s only defeat in matches of this sort, against West Indies in early 2024.Damien Hough, the Adelaide curator, has pretty much got his day-night preparation spot-on and the players widely regard it as the best venue for such matches. In the most recent day-night Test at the Gabba, against West Indies in early 2024, Mitchell Starc felt the pitch was too firm for the pink ball, although it’s worth noting this season’s match will be played much earlier in the season.Mitchell Starc: a fan of Adelaide day-nighters•Getty Images”I think it now comes down to the wicket, which I think Adelaide’s got right because of the ball, and we know it goes soft at certain stages depending on the wicket,” Starc said at the time. “I think there’s a certain cushion to what they make in Adelaide and just why it’s been such a good Test match, the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.”Although there is limited data available for the Gabba, the third session has the lowest batting average, while the middle one has the highest. In day Tests at the ground, the last session has the highest average.Wither (overseas) spinIt remains a realistic scenario that England don’t play a frontline spinner in the first Test, in Perth, and the role may be limited for the visitors throughout. Will Jacks could play a part or the spin may be left in the hands of Jacob Bethell and Joe Root. From the numbers alone, you can understand why England would consider that.On the whole, across the last decade, Australia has been an awful place for visiting spinners. Only once in that time, during India’s victory in 2020-21, have the overseas spinners fared better than Australia’s (which largely means Nathan Lyon).

Lyon was left out for Australia’s most recent Test, against West Indies at Sabina Park, which was played with a pink Dukes under lights and finished in less than seven sessions. It’s highly unlikely that scenario will play out on home soil, although even Lyon was reduced to a bit-part player for large chunks of last season’s series against India. No domestic blissThe more challenging conditions for batters in Test cricket have been reflected in Australia’s domestic first-class competition, the Sheffield Shield. The 2023-24 summer was the only edition in the last 20 years that ended with a collective batting average below 26. The figure climbed a little last season, but pitches remain a gripe among some domestic coaches, who believe the preference for result-oriented surfaces has skewed too far.Nathan Lyon did not bowl a lot on the lively pitches last summer•Getty Images”It was strongly reported and happily received by batting groups across the country… that there was a desire to tone down the pitches across the country and find that better balance between bat and ball,” NSW coach Greg Shipperd told ESPNcricinfo before the season. “I think that worked for two-thirds of the season, until some places [identify] that a result is necessary, and the nature of the pitch changes quite aggressively. I think for that to be stamped out would be excellent.”It was a sentiment echoed by Victoria coach Chris Rogers. “Whether we want to produce pitches that favour bowlers who don’t have to bowl that fast or have huge skill… I’d say we just have to be mindful that we’re going down a path that’s so different to what we face in international cricket,” he told . “I think that’s what England are trying to do with Bazball – they’re trying to play a lot of their domestic cricket on really flat wickets and almost say that that’s what you’re going to face when you play international cricket.”Those who need to balance the budget at CA – and, probably, most who have bought tickets – would no doubt like the Tests to stretch deep into day four. CA chief executive Todd Greenberg recently joked he would get on the roller himself if he could.”I hope the groundsmen stick to their guns and prepare the wickets they want,” Starc said this week. “If we’re worried about five days of revenue, then there’s bigger problems at hand.”

Rohit Sharma's bold new batting template has changed his ODI game – and India's

India’s captain and think tank made a strategic decision to go harder earlier and it has been paying off for them

Sidharth Monga17-Oct-2023Nobody mourns the reduction in the amount of ODI cricket between the last World Cup and this one. You can’t blame them. Still, it is a shame that because so little 50-over cricket is played, and even less by the best players, we might sometimes fail to notice transformative pieces of work. Rohit Sharma’s transformation since he became the full-time India ODI captain might just be one of those. In a World Cup, though, everyone notices. After the duck in the first match in difficult conditions against Australia, Rohit has practically ended two matches inside the first powerplay. He scored 76 off 43 in the first ten overs against Afghanistan, and 45 off 30 against Pakistan. As with everything he does, this was not random. Not a case of feeling good about it on the day and swinging for the hills. He has been batting with elevated intent in ODIs for a while now. Since the start of 2022, which is when he assumed the captaincy, 35 batters have scored 300 or more runs within the first powerplay in ODIs. Only two have gone quicker than Rohit’s strike rate of 111. Neither of these two – Travis Head and Phil Salt – has scored nearly as many runs as Rohit, nor is either of them in a leadership role.Related

  • New-age Rohit tears up old ODI template

Revolutions in cricket are generally planned by captains but enacted by youngsters. The captain – usually a batter – rarely takes on a risky job. In the history of the sport, only two captains have gone delightfully bonkers for a considerable period of time: Brendon McCullum in 2015 and Chris Gayle in 2009.McCullum scored at 163 in the first ten overs through 2015, and Gayle at 117 in 2009. That, though, is their nature. Rohit’s method has been different. The turnaround in his career centred on his becoming obsessed with not getting out in the first 20 balls, and then gradually accelerating before exploding towards the end. He has changed the whole philosophy of his batting. Not only has he changed it, more incredibly, he encountered failure when he started making the change but still kept at it.It all began with T20Is, where India’s approach with the bat was not quite contemporary when he took over. Possibly the new management impressed upon him the need to change. Possibly he wanted the change himself. But he had to earn the right to be able to tell others to put a lower price on their wicket. He couldn’t have done so without lowering the price of his own wicket.!function(){“use strict”;window.addEventListener(“message”,(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(“iframe”);for(var t in a.data[“datawrapper-height”])for(var r=0;r<e.length;r++)if(e[r].contentWindow===a.source){var i=a.data["datawrapper-height"][t]+"px";e[r].style.height=i}}}))}();

India still didn’t win the 2022 T20 World Cup, but Rohit kept at it in ODIs, which were becoming notorious for the formula of watchful starts. What is difficult to figure out, though, is why the captain felt the need to push the intent so high so early. Difficult because India guard their strategy more fiercely than possibly any other team in the world.Clearly, though, it is a strategic shift. India went from 4.44 an over in the batting powerplay in 2019 to 4.83 and 6.27 in 2022 and 2023. Years 2020 and 2021 had hardly any ODI cricket in them. Before the 2019 World Cup, India went at better than five an over in only one year since 2012 – in 2013, which incidentally happens to be when Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli came together as their top three and dominated the run-scoring till the 2019 World Cup.It has been a funny old year in ODIs. In India earlier this year, the new white ball was hooping around corners under the lights during the series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka. It promised a fascinating World Cup, but come the event, this lot of balls is doing precious little barring the odd exception. The ball was seaming and swinging for eight overs back then; now it barely does for eight balls. It is possible the lack of swing has emboldened Rohit further during this World Cup, but his intent has been high even before this.Given how little India want to give away, understanding their approach here might need guesses, some more educated than others. It never hurts to break the back of a chase early. Rohit possibly doesn’t want middling chases to become tricky ones. The other possible reason is that he wants to trust his middle order more, and wants for them to not end up like they did in the 2019 World Cup semi-final. While you want to play as many balls as you can, you want to maximise them. If you do get out doing that, your middle order gets an opportunity to do the same – as opposed to one fine day finding themselves fighting all kinds of fires with no game time behind them.It is more likely just about Rohit leading by example in order to earn the right to demand higher intent from others, but in doing so he has looked sensational. However, you do feel like asking why it took him, and India, so long.

Nathan Lyon tames Lahore as Australia's ghosts disappear

With their win in Lahore, Australia are free in the knowledge that they can stick to what they know if they get the basics right

Alex Malcolm25-Mar-2022The ghosts were there. The ghosts of Headingley, Sydney (twice), Brisbane, and Karachi. They were there sitting on the shoulders of the Australians as they tried to close out victory in Lahore. They were there when Australia dropped key catches in the fourth innings, again. When they fluffed a gifted run-out chance, again. When they burnt three reviews frivolously again, which forced them to second-guess the one when it would have yielded a key wicket. But lady luck finally shone on Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, and Australia, and they slayed their demons and scared off the ghosts to deliver a thoroughly deserved series victory.Related

There’s no denying Australia were the better side across the three matches and there’s an argument that they should have won 2-0, having made all the running in both Karachi and Lahore. There is no doubt they were aided by the toss in both matches, but their batting delivered in the first innings in all three games, and they bowled superbly in the first innings in Karachi and Lahore to give themselves time to take 10 fourth innings wickets, with runs to play with on both occasions.Four dropped catches and three magnificent innings from Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique denied Pakistan in Karachi, with the hosts surviving the second-most overs in the fourth innings in history.Babar threatened to do it again in Lahore. Lyon had to get him out three times, but the last was the most satisfying for both him and Steven Smith. The latter had either dropped or missed no fewer than seven chances across the series, but Smith pouched the one that mattered most, a really sharp catch low to his left after Lyon had got the second new ball to skid on and catch Babar’s outside edge.Smith and Lyon roared as Lahore fell deathly silent. You could see the weight of the world lift from both men’s shoulders.Lyon has been carrying it for some time. Since Headingley 2019 no less. Australia’s inability to close out games since that famous day has fallen on his shoulders. But his overall form since Covid-19 stopped global cricket in March 2020 has been a curiosity. Over his previous 11 Tests prior to Lahore, he had averaged 39.80 and struck at 95.20 without a five-wicket haul.It wasn’t that he was bowling badly. But there was a certain sameness and rigidity to his pace, his lines, and his lengths at times across the period that had caused some consternation both inside the camp and out.The big knock was that he wasn’t creating fourth innings chances. But in all fairness, he had had very little luck in the supposed fourth innings failures that were thrown at his feet. He had Ben Stokes missed at slip and plumb lbw at Headingley. He had Rishabh Pant dropped twice by the wicketkeeper in Sydney 2021.Steven Smith held a sharp catch to remove the key figure of Babar Azam•AFP/Getty ImagesThose ghosts threatened to consume Lyon in Lahore. Babar should have been run out early in his innings. Travis Head made a poor throw to Lyon but his fumble, although not his fault, did bring back memories of Headingley. He had Babar caught brilliantly at slip by Smith off the glove and pad but it was given not out. Australia had torched two reviews on earlier lbw shouts where the inside edges could be seen and heard in Sydney, so Cummins was reluctant to burn their last, given they weren’t 100 per cent sure it brushed Babar’s glove. The ghosts of Stokes’ lbw haunted Lyon again.Babar then tried to launch Lyon over long-on in the last over prior to tea and miscued to deep midwicket. Head misjudged the flight and failed to get hands to a catch that should have been taken. The ghosts of Stokes again would have flashed through Lyon’s mind as he slumped to his haunches. But luck evened things out for Lyon and Australia today. He was perhaps fortunate to dismal Azhar Ali with a 50-50 DRS call going Australia’s way despite the original decision being not out.Lyon also bowled Hasan Ali via his helmet and the back of the bat as he attempted to sweep out of the rough. And fellow spinner Mitchell Swepson held a spectacular catch in the deep to hand Lyon his five-for.It was a rich reward for Lyon who has bowled better than the numbers have suggested at times in this series, and deserved more luck than he has got. He was rewarded for a different line to Imam-ul-Haq, attacking the left-hander with a rare venture from over the wicket to get him caught brilliantly at silly mid-off by Marnus Labuschagne.Changes in pace, dropping below 80kph at times, was also part of what undid Babar, with some of his slower deliveries ripping out of the footmarks and eventually, causing Babar to play for more turn than was there on the one he eventually nicked. That Swepson, Lyon’s understudy for so long was unable to take a wicket in this Test and was only entrusted with five overs on the final day proves Lyon is still invaluable to Australia’s attack despite his detractors. However, it is clear that Australia’s path to 20 wickets in Asia relies heavily on Cummins, Mitchell Starc and their bevy of reserve quicks than on Lyon or any spinner he’s paired with. Cummins, Starc and Cameron Green combined for 23 of Australia’s 41 wickets for the series while the spinners took just 15. Green took the key wicket of Abdullah Shafique while Cummins was monumental again as a strike-force blowing away Fawad Alam and Rizwan with two superb deliveries to expose the tail. Although Pakistan were equally guilty of DRS blunders, as Rizwan would have been reprieved if they had used the review they were reluctant to use, having burned two of their three already.Lyon’s role as a holder in Australia’s attack even when it is spinning big, and more liberal use of Labuschagne, while the quicks attack when the moment suits, may well be the method going forward in Asia for Australia. They have been freed from the ghosts of the past. They are free in the knowledge that they can stick to what they know if they get the basics right.

Painting Corners: Best MLB Prop Bets Today (Fade Paul Skenes on Saturday vs. Braves?)

Saturday’s MLB action features a handful of high level pitchers from rookies to veterans, and we are targeting the player prop market for a handful of them.

Paul Skeens has quickly emerged as the NL Rookie of the Year front runner. The No. 1 overall pick will look to build on his case against the Braves on the road, but can you trust him?

Find out how I’m attacking the player prop market for pitchers on Saturday’s slate.

Best MLB Prop Bets for Saturday, June 29th

  • Aaron Nola Under 6.5 Strikeouts (-146)
  • Paul Skenes Under 17.5 Outs (-102)
  • Nestor Cortes Over 17.5 Outs (-146)

Aaron Nola Under 6.5 Strikeouts

Nola has failed to go over this mark in 11 of 16 starts this season, and despite being a poor offense, the Marlins don’t strikeout all that much.

Miami has struckout the 10th fewest times this season, and Nola is posting his lowest whiff rate of his career.

While he may pitch a lot, it may not come with a ton of K’s.

Paul Skenes Under 17.5 Outs

Skeens has gone over this mark in six of his first eight big league starts, but I’m willing to wager that he has a setback of sorts on Saturday in the hitter friendly Truist Park.

The Braves thrive at Truist Park, eighth in home OPS as the ball flies through wind tunnels. While Skeens is a strikeout artist, he also has been prone to hard contact that can be exaggerated in this particular stadium.

The 2023 No. 1 overall pick is striking out 33% of the batters he has faced thus far, but is also in the 50th percentile in terms of hard contact and 37th percentile in terms of average exit velocity. The Braves are about league average in terms of strikeout rate, so with some plate discipline can come some hitter friendly conditions.

I believe Skenes will be tested enough to warrant betting the under on his outs prop.

Nestor Cortes Over 17.5 Outs

Cortes has gone over his mark in half of his starts this season, but there is good reason to believe that he can go deeper into this game given the Blue Jays pronounced struggles against lefty pitchers.

Toronto is 24th in OPS against southpaws as the team can’t string together quality at bats.

Why do I believe this is the best path to bet on a strong Cortes outing? The Blue Jays have struckout the fewest times against lefty pitchers, which means the team is making weak contact and easy outs so Cortes can keep his pitch count down.

Bank on a quality start from the southpaw.

Ex-Man City & Newcastle footballer Joey Barton learns punishment for string of 'grossly offensive' social media posts including against former Lioness Eni Aluko

Former Manchester City player Joey Barton has received a suspended sentence for 'grossly offensive' social media posts to football pundits Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward and broadcaster Jeremy Vine. The 43-year-old was handed a six-month prison sentence, which is suspended for 18 months. The ex-Newcastle United man claims that he "never meant to hurt anyone" with his electronic communications.

Barton found guilty by jury

In November, Barton was found guilty of sending 'grossly offensive' social media posts, where he called Vine a "bike nonce" and compared Ward and Aluko to serial killer couple Fred and Rose West on X. Jurors at Liverpool Crown Court found that he had "crossed the line between free speech and a crime" on six counts after being charged with 12 counts of sending a grossly offensive electronic communications with intent to cause distress or anxiety back in January 2024.

At the trial, Barton said: "It was not meant to call him a paedophile. It was a bad, dark, juvenile joke. I have not at any point tried to cause distress or anxiety or risk his life or his daughters' lives. I don't want people to fear for their lives, I'm a dad. I cannot believe I'm on trial for this. Words on a social media site."

The former Bristol Rovers manager was handed an 18-month suspended sentence, which means he will not serve any time behind bars unless he reoffends in that period. He was given six months each for two offences against Aluko and four months for each of the four counts related to Vine and Ward. At the sentencing, Judge Andrew Menary KC also ordered Barton to perform 200 hours of unpaid community work and pay more than £20,000 in costs.

After leaving court, Barton told The BBC: "If I could turn back the clock I would. I never meant to hurt anyone. It was a joke that got out of hand. Nobody wants to go to jail."

'Sustained campaign of online abuse'

The judge added that targeting individuals online, in the way Barton did, falls outside the realm of freedom of speech.

He told the court: "Robust debate, satire, mockery and even crude language may fall within permissible free speech. But when posts deliberately target individuals with vilifying comparisons to serial killers or false insinuations of paedophilia, designed to humiliate and distress, they forfeit their protection. As the jury concluded, your offences exemplify behaviour that is beyond this limit – amounting to a sustained campaign of online abuse that was not mere commentary but targeted, extreme and deliberately harmful."

Menary added that he was satisfied that Barton's custodial terms did not have to be "served immediately" and he had faith he could change his ways for good.

He said: "In light of the steps you have taken, I am persuaded that there is some prospect of rehabilitation – that an immediate custodial sentence is not required to protect either the public or the victims. A suspended sentence order may – may – itself operate as a deterrent against any future defending by you."

Two-year restraining orders were issued against each of Barton's victims, which includes publishing any reference to them on any social media or broadcast platform.

After the verdict, Vine added: "I'm happy the case is over. Joey Barton has been made to pay a lot for his disgusting lies and abuse, but I fear he'll keep offending until the day he dies."

Cheshire Police said they hoped this case would deter others from sharing "abusive and hateful messages" online going forward.

"Barton's posts would have been seen by hundreds, if not thousands of people, and yet he showed no regard or consideration for how this would impact on his victims and their wellbeing. The sentence handed to him today comes with a number of strict conditions and should he breach these in any way he may face the prospect of time behind bars," said the police spokesperson.

Fullkrug & Wilson upgrade: West Ham chasing £26m CF who's 'like Harry Kane'

While their performances last year and at the start of the season suggest otherwise, West Ham United do have a talented squad.

The likes of Freddie Potts, Jarrod Bowen, Mateus Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Kyle Walker-Peters are all good to great players who will help move the East Londoners away from a Premier League relegation scrap as the season goes on.

However, one area of the team that the Hammers have consistently failed to address is up top, with neither Niclas Füllkrug nor Callum Wilson good enough to lead the line.

Fortunately, West Ham are now being linked with an inform number nine who could end their striker curse and was even linked to Harry Kane as a youngster.

West Ham target Füllkrug and Wilson upgrade

Before his injury, Füllkrug had made seven appearances for West Ham this season, in which he failed to score or assist a single goal, which makes news of his likely departure in January rather welcome to most fans.

Wilson, on the other hand, has been able to find the back of the net twice, in fact, but even so, he has hardly blown anyone away in his nine appearances so far this season, and with his injury record being what it is, he cannot be relied upon.

So, with all that in mind, it’s clear that the East Londoners are in desperate need of a new striker once the window opens, and fortunately, that might happen.

According to a recent report from Turkey, West Ham are among several sides interested in man of the moment, Troy Parrott.

Alongside the Hammers, the report claims that Everton, Leeds United and Stuttgart are keen on signing the Irish international from AZ Alkmaar, who want at least €30m for him, which is about £26m.

It could be a tough transfer to get over the line, but with how well Parrott has played in recent years, and how much of an upgrade on Füllkrug and Wilson he’d be, it’s one worth fighting for.

Why Parrott would be massive upgrade on Wilson & Füllkrug

It’s the obvious place to start, but it’s also the most important: Parrott would be a huge upgrade on Wilson and Füllkrug because he’s simply the better goalscorer.

For example, while the two West Ham strikers have just two goals between them this season, the Irishman has already racked up an astounding tally of 13 goals and two assists in 14 appearances, totalling 928 minutes.

That comes out to a sensational average of 1.07 goal involvements every game, or one every 61.86 minutes.

Such an incredible rate of return makes the claim of one analyst, made over five years ago, that he was “reminiscent of Harry Kane” as a youngster look rather reasonable today.

It’s not just this season that the former Tottenham Hotspur gem has been on fire, though, as he ended last season with an excellent haul of 20 goals and five assists in 47 games.

With that said, the second reason he’d be an excellent upgrade on the Hammers’ ageing forwards is that he’s still just 23 years old, and therefore has plenty left in the tank.

Moreover, while he did have some injury problems early on in his career, he has not missed more than nine games for club and country in any of the last three campaigns.

Finally, as was made quite clear over the last week or so, the Dublin-born game-changer is someone for the big occasions.

For example, he scored both goals in Ireland’s 2-0 win over Portugal, and then followed that up with what is already a legendary hat-trick against Hungary, securing the country’s place in the World Cup play-offs.

Moreover, his third goal was practically the final kick of the game, suggesting he isn’t someone to flap under the most immense of pressure.

Ultimately, while it might be difficult to get ahead of the other interested parties, West Ham should be doing all they can to sign Parrott in January, as he might be the man to end their striker curse.

Barcelona decide on Harry Kane as 'ideal replacement' for Robert Lewandowski & could trigger Bayern Munich star's £57m release clause

Harry Kane has reportedly emerged as Barcelona's top target to replace ageing striker Robert Lewandowski at the end of the 2025-26 season. Lewandowski is expected to depart Hansi Flick's side as a free agent when his contract with the Catalan giants expires next summer, with Barca considering triggering the £57m release clause in Kane's contract at Bayern Munich.

  • Kane on Barca's wanted list

Barcelona are expected to invest in a new No. 9 next summer to replace Lewandowski and have put Kane at the top of their wanted list, according to . The England captain has enjoyed a prolific time at Bayern since moving from Tottenham in 2023 and won his first major trophy last season by firing the Bavarian giants to the Bundesliga title. Kane turned 32 back in July but has scored an incredible 108 goals in 113 appearances for Bayern, making him one of the deadliest strikers in Europe. The England captain does have an exit clause in his contract at Allianz Arena, and it's thought Barca could be preparing to trigger it to bring him to Camp Nou.

    Barcelona line up Lewandowski replacements

Kane is not the only player being linked with a move to Barcelona to replace Lewandowski. Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez is also thought to be a target, while Barcelona president Joan Laporta is said to be "obsessed" about trying to bring in Erling Haaland to the club. More recently, Etta Eyong has also been mentioned as a low-cost option, due to Barca's continued financial issues.

Meanwhile, Lewandowski, now 37, has spoken about his future while on international duty with Poland and insists he has not yet decided his next move. He told reporters: "I still don’t know the answer. That’s why I’m not in a hurry, I’m at peace with myself. And that is the most important thing. Even if, for example, the club contacted me now, I still wouldn’t answer that question. Because I also have to feel what’s best for me. Now I’m calm, I’m not in a hurry and, at the moment, I don’t expect anything else."

Lewandowski has had to accept a reduced role at Barcelona in the 2025-26 season, due to injury and with Ferran Torres gaining prominence, but is still the team's top scorer currently. The veteran striker has seven goals from nine La Liga outings, which also means that only Kylian Mbappe has netted more times than Lewandowski in Spain's top flight in 2025-26.

  • What has Kane said about his future?

It remains to be seen if Kane could be tempted to Barcelona, but he will surely be well aware that England team-mate Marcus Rashford has been posting some impressive statistics since joining the club on loan from Manchester United. Rashford has received plenty of praise after contributing six assists and two goals in his debut La Liga campaign and making the most of his first-team opportunities while Raphinha is out injured.

Meanwhile, Kane has spoken about his future this season, saying he's happy at Bayern and is willing to discuss a new contract. He said: "We can certainly talk about that. I have almost two years left. It's not like I'm in the final year of my contract and anyone is panicking. I'm fine. The club is fine. I think they're happy with me, and I'm happy with them. Those discussions can take place."

What next for Kane and Barca?

Barcelona's continued financial issues will affect any transfer plans and it remains to be seen if the club can afford to trigger Kane's release clause and add him to the squad in time for next season. Lewandowski's priority is thought to be to stay at Barcelona, as he is not tempted by a lucrative transfer to Saudi Pro League, and he may well hope he can earn a new contract if he can continue to deliver goals and titles for the Catalan giants. Barcelona will also have to make a decision on Rashford's future. The forward's contract at Barcelona includes a purchase option, but the club have already ruled out triggering it in January and there's no guarantee yet that his loan spell will be made permanent.

Akash Deep, Arshdeep likely out of fourth Test; Kamboj called-up as cover

India’s preparations for the fourth Test in Manchester have taken a hit with two of their fast bowlers, Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh, picking up injuries that are likely to rule them out of the match. ESPNcricinfo has learned the selectors have decided to add Haryana fast bowler Anshul Kamboj as cover for the final two Tests of the five-match series. While Arshdeep hurt his bowling hand in his follow through during a training session in Beckenham on Thursday, Akash Deep has picked up a groin niggle. The fourth Test, which starts on July 23 at Old Trafford, is vital for both teams as India could either draw level with England or lose the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, in case there is a result.Related

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate had pointed out on Thursday that Arshdeep’s injury would impact India’s planning, and the team’s concerns have now deepened with doubts over Akash Deep. The right-arm quick played a key role in India drawing level in Birmingham with a 10-wicket match haul. In the next Test at Lord’s, he picked up just one wicket, struggling to find rhythm from the Pavilion End. He also walked off the field on the fourth afternoon to get some treatment, though it could not confirmed at the time what the issue was.At training in Beckenham, Akash Deep did not bowl or bat, but did fitness drills under the observation of trainer Adrian Le Roux. Whether the injuries are serious or not will only be known by Monday when India will have a media briefing, but both Akash Deep and Arshdeep travelled to Manchester from London on Saturday.Arshdeep Singh has suffered an injury to his bowling hand•Bipin Patel

As he started to bowl at training, Arshdeep, who is still uncapped in Tests, was heard saying: “I’ll bowl a lot today, cover all the work of a week, and then go and shop.” A little while later, though, he walked out and had his bowling hand taped. It could not be ascertained if he has received stitches, but Arshdeep would have counted himself in contention for the Old Trafford Test in case Akash Deep was ruled out.India now find themselves in a tight spot, and the question of Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in Manchester becomes more critical. Ten Doeschate had admitted that, with the with the series on the line, India would be “leaning towards” playing Bumrah in the fourth Test, but his selection would come down to several other factors including the weather in Manchester and the fitness of the other bowlers.Mohammed Siraj, the only India fast bowler to have played all three Tests in this series, has already bowled the most overs for the visitors and ten Doeschate said his workload would need to be carefully managed too. Prasidh Krishna, who played the first two Tests, is the other specialist fast bowler in the squad, apart from the bowling allrounder Shardul Thakur who played the first Test in Leeds.Kamboj, 24, is a stocky right-arm fast bowler who can be skiddy as well as hit the deck hard on occasion. He was part of the India A squad that played two unofficial Tests prior to the England Test series and picked up four wickets in the second match in Northampton, including twin strikes in one over in the second innings. Prior to that, Kamboj also shared an unbroken 149-run stand with Tanush Kotian in the same match, which ended in a draw.England lead the series 2-1 after their thrilling 22-run win at Lord’s, sealed in the final session of the final day.
